THE GROOMING ACADEMY
Dog Groomer Training Courses at The Academy
We provide dog grooming courses to students from across the UK and overseas. The Academy is a centre dedicated to teaching the skills of professional dog grooming, not a commercial salon operating a training side-line to the business.
Our web site will provide you with information on all of our dog grooming courses and answer many of the questions that people often have. We hope this will assist you in making an informed decision when selecting the right training and the right course for you. Primarily, our courses are structured towards those people who would want to learn to correctly groom and style dogs and start, or continue, to make a living as a professional dog groomer. It will be of particular interest to those people who are intending to open their own grooming salon, or who may wish to add a dog grooming salon onto an existing business (Pet Shops, Boarding Kennels, Veterinary Surgeries, etc.). Alternatively, we are able to train those who wish to learn how to groom for non-commercial use, for example, to enable you to have the dog grooming skills for the dog show ring. We are conveniently located about half way between Manchester and Liverpool, and close to motorway junctions for the M6 and M62 – so we are easily accessible wherever you are travelling from.
AIM Qualifications and City & Guilds Approved Centre
All of the teaching staff at The Grooming Academy have the highest dog grooming qualifications, with many years experience (combined, over 90 years grooming and training experience) and each tutor is a qualified teacher with the skills that will meet your needs as a learner. We believe that our courses offer the best value for money that it is possible to give. Our students are trained to trim and style dogs and not, as we see far too often today, to simply shear off the coat and leave every breed of dog looking the same as the next!
As a quality training provider we can offer the initial skills training through to the most advanced levels, combined with an on-going consultation and advisory service for all of our students. We have several different courses available, so that our training is able to match your personal needs. Should you have any special requirements for your training course please speak to us, we will be pleased to incorporate any special needs that you may have. Our courses cover the practical skills required for correct dog grooming, Canine Stylist Diploma, City & Guilds 7863-02 (Introduction to Dog Grooming), City & Guilds 7863-03 Introductory level and 7763-03 Professional level.
We have been teaching dog grooming to our learners at The Academy for over 20 years. In 2004 our centre gained recognition for the teaching facilities and staff qualifications to become a direct City & Guilds Centre (a direct centre has the status of a College of Further Education). Since then we have also been approved as a centre offering the dog grooming qualifications from AIM Qualifications and Assessment Group and Canine First Aid as a formal qualification from Protrainings UK. Over that period we have trained hundreds of students to these nationally recognised levels of qualification in this rewarding skill.
We are extremely proud of our student’s achievements throughout this period of time, with many of them now running very successful dog grooming salons and achieving excellent reputations in their local areas. We are always conscious that our students leave us and enter the marketplace with our reputation as trainers and so we have every incentive to make sure that our students are amongst the very best – and we are prepared to put in the time and effort to ensure that is the case.
Groom and Style Dogs
The occupation of a Dog Groomer has evolved over many years to a far more professional level than ever before. It has become widely accepted throughout the trade and with the general public that it is referred to as a Dog Stylist, and our training courses have the content to reflect the knowledge and skills needed to groom and style dogs reflective of their breed standard. The tasks and responsibilities undertaken now encompass a wider range of skills and services, for example:
- Trimming, Styling and correct grooming of a wide range of dogs to breed-specific standards
- Grooming and Styling of recently introduced 'Designer Dogs'
- Advice and applications of a wide range of skin-care and coat-care products
- Undertaking primary health checks on each dog to advise the owner of any potential problems which may require treatment or veterinary attention
- Advising owners on basic grooming maintenance skills and treatments for each dog during periods between grooming appointments
All of these skills are achieved by a combination of training and experience. At The Grooming Academy we can teach you the required skills to commence your career in styling dogs. There is no substitute for experience gained over time, but we can assure you of an on-going advisory service to assist you at those times when you may encounter the unexpected – and we’re always here for a refresher course or to enhance your grooming skills.
