The Best Decision I Ever Made

Karen Weeks, dog groomer, Stoke On TrentPrior to Karen Weeks qualifying in 2011 her life was very different, working in a call centre and enduring the drudgery of an unfulfilling job, she decided to invest in her future with a combined Diploma and City & Guilds (Level 2) course with The Grooming Academy. Two years further on, in 2013, Karen’s life looks a whole lot different, with her own mobile grooming business. Her mobile dog grooming business operates in the client’s home and because many people will have already bathed their dog before she arrives Karen is able to groom/style up to 7 dogs a day. She says that her self-employed business now allows her to enjoy her life, she has just bought her own horse and says “life couldn’t be better!”.

Karen came to The Grooming Academy in 2011 on a combined Diploma/City & Guilds Course, which gave her the confidence and qualification to commence work in the grooming industry, she started by working part time at a local grooming salon gaining experience and confidence in styling a variety of breeds. She also did volunteer work with Animal Lifeline, a local animal charity, grooming their dogs free of charge to further expand her experience. Shortly afterwards Karen set up her own business and website www.fluffiesdoggrooming.com to ensure she was on the first page when prospective clients search Google in her area.

She designed her own logo and had professionally produced magnetic signs for her car, which allows her to advertise every day while she is out travelling around her clients. She also used local marketing to launch her business, including advertising in the local newspaper and leaflet distribution (Karen explained to us that she actually found the leaflet distribution wasn’t cost effective in her experience).

Karen is a great example of someone who, using a combination of the right training and her own skills and determination, can transform their life. She now has a successful business that allows her to enjoy her work and home life to the fullest extent.
